Nestled in over 17 acres of mature woodland Killeadan House is steeped in history, built on the site of a Franciscan Monk settlement which dates back to 1350 A.D. and which includes a spring said to have been famous as far back as the pagan times, the property comprises Killeadan House, substantial stables and a garden house.
Located between Kiltimagh and Bohola the property has been closely associated with the early day’s of one of Ireland’s most famous poet’s, Anthony Rafterty who worked as a stable boy at Killeadan House before being banished over a dispute with the landlord Frank Taffe. None of Raftery's poems were written down. Douglas Hyde, with the help of Lady Gregory in Galway and Thady Conlon in Killedan collected and translated them into English around the turn of the century.
In later years it was in Killeaden House that Miss MacManus formed the second branch in all Ireland of the Gaelic League. It was there also that she wrote all her famous Irish historical novels, The Silk of the Kine, The Professor in Erin, In Sarsfield’s Days and all the rest. One, Within the Four Seas of Fola consists entirely of local tales and lore. As well as this, nearly all the stories in The Middle Kingdom come from Killeaden and its neighbourhood.
The property is accessed via a tree lined avenue which passes the stables and courtyard before opening up to the beautiful grounds around the house which boast stunning mature oak, beech and whitetorn trees. The dwelling, which has fallen into disrepair over recent years, is laid out over two floors and comprises an entrance porch, hallway, three reception rooms, two dining rooms, gun room, kitchen and utility on the ground floor while the first floor comprises eight bedrooms, a bathroom and wc.
The entire property has a magical feel as you walk through the beautiful woodlands and come upon the stunning stone buildings which ooze potential and charm.
